Episode "To Set It Right" from The Lieutenant (NBC) starring Gary
Lockwood. Nichelle Nichols, who passed
away yesterday, guest stars as the fiancée of a black Marine private who comes
into conflict with a white member of his squad whom he grew up with and who had
mistreated him years earlier. Lt. Rice
(Lockwood) seeks her counsel to help the private out.
Even here, you can see that Nichols
already had great presence and acting skills.
Producer Gene Roddenberry was so taken with her that they had an affair
and he ultimately cast her in Star Trek, though he ended up marrying
"Nurse Chapel" Majel Barrett.
The installment "To Set It
Right" was written by Lee Erwin, concerns racial prejudice, and featured
Nichelle Nichols as the fiancée of a black Marine, portrayed by Don Marshall,
with Dennis Hopper as the antagonist to that Marine. It was never broadcast.
The subject of race was considered taboo in entertainment television in 1964,
and because the network refused to broadcast "To Set It Right" or
even pay for it, MGM had to shoulder the entire cost of production. The Paley
Center for Media in New York City possesses a videotape of the episode. This
episode was eventually broadcast on the cable channel TNT in the early 1990s.
