Message to My Readers 041122

Well, it has been almost exactly a month since my last blog update.  Here is another update of this blog.

This time it is 89 pages of links to the news covering the last month.  They appear in the categories listed below, including Veterans, Criminal Justice and Racism and Ageism and other discrimination, Economics and Coronavirus, Economics and Corruption and Healthcare and Education, Ecology and Pollution and Climate Change, Politics and Coronavirus, Politics, Terrorism, Military, and General and Miscellaneous.   Don’t forget to click on the items in the column on the right to open the pages for those categories.

Regarding the coronavirus pandemic, in the past month there have been 44.7 million new cases in the world, 149 thousand new deaths in the world, 947 thousand new cases in the U.S.A., 20.6 thousand new deaths in the U.S.A., 21.3 thousand new cases in Pennsylvania, 634 new deaths in Pennsylvania, 3.6 thousand new cases in Philadelphia, and 65 new deaths in Philadelphia.  During this past month, almost all the deaths were among the unvaccinated; there were almost no deaths among people who were vaccinated.  The cumulative totals for each of these categories since the beginning of the pandemic are now as follows: 499,188,710; 6,203,372; 82,062,989; 1,012,151; 2,789,262; 44,424; 309,301; and 5,081.

During the next few months, we will be contending with the new BA.2 Omicron sub-variant of the coronavirus.  This variant appears to be more contagious, but less lethal.  However, until the deaths are down to, and remain at, zero for several days, we should not become too relaxed about wearing face masks and being fully vaccinated and boosted.  By the way, the second booster shot is now available to all those who received the first booster more than four months ago and are  over age 50 or are  immunocompromised or have underlying conditions that make them more vulnerable.  I strongly recommend that all eligible people be fully vaccinated and fully boosted.

The war in Ukraine has continued to rage on during the past month.  Ukraine military have been providing severe resistance and inflicting heavy casualties on the Russian military.  The Russians have been forced to retreat from the western part of Ukraine.  The Russian military is being accused of having committed war crimes and killing many Ukrainian civilians.  Putin has threatened to retaliate with nuclear weapons if any NATO forces attempt to intervene in defense of Ukraine.  Meanwhile, the U.S.A. and other NATO nations have continued to provide weapons and humanitarian supplies to Ukraine.  More than 4.5 million refugees, about half of whom are children, have evacuated from Ukraine to neighboring nations such as Poland and Hungary.

The world is in a great struggle to determine if the dominant form of government will be authoritarianism or democracy.  Even here in the United States, long known as the world’s beacon of democracy, there is a question about whether democracy can survive without another civil war.

We must continue to resist tyranny, fascism, authoritarianism, racism, sexism, misogyny, xenophobia, etc.  The three impurities of life are avarice, anger, and ignorance.  What others need from us is respect, kindness, and love.  The more respect, kindness, and love that we give to others, the more respect, kindness, and love we get in our lives and the better we feel about ourselves.

Peace and love to all.  Feedback is welcome.  My contact information is:

National Vietnam War Veterans Day is on Tuesday, March 29, 2022. This is a day to recognize and remember the more than 8.7 million men and women who served during the Vietnam era, the 3.4 million who served in theater, the 58,000 who paid the ultimate price, and the 1,584 who remain missing and unaccounted-for. In our nation where less than one percent of the population currently wears the uniform and less than seven percent has ever worn the uniform, this day is a great opportunity to say, “Thank you for your service.”

She Discovered What Happened to 400 Dutch Jews Who Disappeared: In a new exhibition, Wally de Lang, a Dutch historian, has tracked what happened to each of the men rounded up in the first Nazi raids on Dutch Jews, whose fates have largely been a mystery for decades.  Over the course of two days in February 1941, some 400 Jewish men were rounded up by Nazi police in raids in Amsterdam. Only a few survived the war.
