Another eventful seventeen days have passed since I last updated this blog. 

 

Regarding the pandemic, there have been about 4.1 million new cases of COVID-19 in the world (18% increase), with about 88,000 (11% increase) new COVID-19 deaths in the world.  The average number of new cases per day in the world was about 257,000.  The average number of deaths per day in the world was about 5,500.  There have been about 642,000 (11% increase) new cases of COVID-19 in the USA, with about 13,000 (7% increase) new deaths in the USA.  The average number of new cases per day in the USA was about 40,000.  The average number of deaths per day in the USA was about 800. There have been about 11,500 (9% increase) new cases of COVID-19 in Pennsylvania, with about 205 (3% increase) new deaths in Pennsylvania.  The average number of new cases per day in Pennsylvania was about 720.  The average number of deaths per day in Pennsylvania was about 13. There have been about 1,800 (5% increase) new cases of COVID-19 in Philadelphia, with about 18 (1% increase) new deaths in Philadelphia.  The average number of new cases per day in Philadelphia was about 110.  The average number of deaths per day in Philadelphia was about 1. By comparison, there have been about 4,200 (13% increase) new cases of COVID-19 in Nebraska, with about 28 (7% increase) new deaths in Nebraska. The average number of new cases per day in Nebraska was about 262.  The average number of deaths per day in Nebraska was about 2.  There have been about 823 (23% increase) new cases of COVID-19 in Lancaster County, Nebraska, with 1 (5% increase) new deaths in Lancaster County, Nebraska.  The average number of new cases per day in Lancaster County, Nebraska was about 51.  The average number of deaths per day in Lancaster County, Nebraska was less than 1. 

At this rate (average of 835 deaths per day in the USA), we can expect to suffer another 305,000 deaths over the next 12 months, at which time there may be a safe and effective vaccine available to all Americans or a therapeutic available for those with the worst infections.  Added to the 193,000 deaths already experienced, the total would then be 498,000 (nearly half a million American souls – more than the total KIAs in WWII).  Infection rates appear to be out of control in 16 of the 50 states in the nation (with rates of greater than 2,000 per 100,000 population).  The states with the most cases per million of population in order are: Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, Arizona, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Nevada, Texas, New York, Iowa, New Jersey, Arkansas, and Rhode Island.

It is time for all of us to speak up for and provide financial support for our preferred candidates, regardless of where they appear on the ballot.  This may be the most important election in the history of our nation.  It may decide if we remain a democratic constitutional republic or continue in the direction of becoming a kakistocratic kleptocratic fascistic oligarchic plutocracy/autocracy.  In the blog update of four weeks ago, the offices to be filled in the election were identified.  Become familiar with that and know how you will vote before you go to the polls or before you complete your ballot-by-mail.  All are urged to call or email (via their on-line Website) your elected officials and register your thoughts and feelings about the disruptions in the service of the U.S. Postal Service and insist that they ensure that there will be no disruption to exercising our right to vote.

Eligibility for the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) is expanding under the new final regulation and changes will begin in October. PCAFC expansion will occur in two phases, once the Secretary of Veterans Affairs has certified to Congress that VA’s new caregiver information technology system is fully implemented. The first phase will include eligible Veterans who incurred or aggravated a serious injury in the line of duty in the active military, naval, or air service on or before May 7, 1975. WWII, Korea and Vietnam Veterans will be able to apply after the official launch date, which will be announced by VA in mid-September.  The final phase will occur two years following the first date of expansion and will expand PCAFC eligibility to include eligible Veterans from all eras regardless of when an eligible Veteran’s serious injury was incurred or aggravated in the line of duty in the active military, naval, or air service.  Caregivers can visit VA caregiver support or call the Caregiver Support Line at 855-260-3274 for further information.
