On Dec. 6, 2016, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 6416, the Jeff Miller and Richard Blumenthal Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2016.  On Dec. 10, 2016, the bill Passed the Senate without amendment by Voice Vote.  On Dec. 16, 2016, President Obama signed the bill and it became Public Law No: 114-315.


 

UPDATE: Veterans Affairs Gets Partial Hiring Freeze Exemption After Outcry


 

Veterans Opioid Prescription Initiative Successful


 

On Monday, 01/23/2017, President Trump initiated a 90-day federal hiring freeze until the Office of Management and Budget can develop a long-term plan to reduce the size of the federal government's workforce through attrition. Acting VA Secretary Robert Snyder said he would continue to hire medical staff and other front line personnel, and the VFW fully expects Trump’s VA nominee, Dr. David Shulkin, and DOD to do likewise. Long time federal civilian personnel experts have called the temporary freeze a prudent step that many new administrations exercise in order to assess what they have before moving forward.
