Advocacy Handbook - AMRA members who would like to visit
their lawmakers but want to do it the "right" way and make a good
impression should consider AMRA's new Handbook: Legislative Advocacy for Members - A Guide to Contacting National &
Local Officials.

suggestions on important issues to discuss with your elected officials.
Veterans Campaign - The number of veterans serving in
elected office has declined rapidly over the last forty years. Veterans are a valuable yet untapped resource
of superb elected leaders. They have
outstanding leadership experience, have made difficult decisions under
pressure, and accomplished whatever America has asked of them, honorably. As
one of the most diverse groups within the United States, they have consistently
put their differences aside to work together for the common good. Most
importantly, Veterans have demonstrated their willingness to put America and
its citizens before their own well-being.
Veterans Campaign is the first ever non-partisan, non-ideological
organization whose mission is to train veterans to run for public office.

Reconstructing
Lost Military Records - The blaze that ripped through the
National Personnel Records Center in a St. Louis suburb shortly after midnight
on July 12, 1973, consumed 16 million to 18 million official military personnel
files in the days before computers kept such records safe. Few could have
predicted the harm it would visit on the veterans who were denied VA benefits—some
to this day—because they could not reconstruct their military service
files. Veterans whose records have been
lost can fill out a specific form at the National Archives website (http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/na-13055-info-2-reconstruct-medical-data.pdf)
that authorizes the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) to search for
other types of documents that would assist the veteran with their VA healthcare
access or compensation claim, or for valuable research their family member’s
service history. For more information,
visit the Department of Veterans Affairs website for veterans whose records
were destroyed: http://www.benefits.va.gov/COMPENSATION/NPRC1973Fire.asp.

Presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson suggested that the
Department of Veterans Affairs could be eliminated by moving its services and
programs under the Department of Defense. The VFW strongly opposes this idea for
