A little less than two weeks ago, I uploaded an update to this blog.  What an eventful two weeks it has been.

 

Regarding the pandemic, there have been about 3.2 million new cases of COVID-19 in the world (24% increase), with about 77,000 (13% increase) new COVID-19 deaths in the world.  The average number of new cases per day in the world was about 245,000.  The average number of deaths per day in the world was about 5,900.  There have been about 894,000 (26% increase) new cases of COVID-19 in the USA, with about 11,600 (8% increase) new deaths in the USA.  The average number of new cases per day in the USA was about 69,000.  The average number of deaths per day in the USA was about 890. There have been about 11,400 (11% increase) new cases of COVID-19 in Pennsylvania, with about 227 (3% increase) new deaths in Pennsylvania.  The average number of new cases per day in Pennsylvania was about 880.  The average number of deaths per day in Pennsylvania was about 17. There have been about 1,700 (6% increase) new cases of COVID-19 in Philadelphia, with about 36 (2% increase) new deaths in Philadelphia.  The average number of new cases per day in Philadelphia was about 133.  The average number of deaths per day in Philadelphia was about 3. By comparison, there have been about 3,200 (15% increase) new cases of COVID-19 in Nebraska, with about 28 (10% increase) new deaths in Nebraska. The average number of new cases per day in Nebraska was about 248.  The average number of deaths per day in Nebraska was about 2.  There have been about 600 (28% increase) new cases of COVID-19 in Lancaster County, Nebraska, with 1 (8% increase) new deaths in Lancaster County, Nebraska.  The average number of new cases per day in Lancaster County, Nebraska was about 47.  The average number of deaths per day in Lancaster County, Nebraska was less than 1. 

At this rate (average of 891 deaths per day in the USA), we can expect to suffer another 325,000 deaths over the next 12 months, at which time there may be a safe and effective vaccine available to all Americans or a therapeutic available for those with the worst infections.  Added to the 150,000 deaths already experienced, the total would then be 475,000 (nearly a half million American souls – more than the total KIAs in WWII).  Infection rates appear to be increasing in about 80 percent of the states in the nation, with the fastest increases in those states that reopened very aggressively 8-12 weeks ago.  For example, see: https://www.healthline.com/health-news/here-are-the-states-where-covid-19-is-increasing#Where-cases-are-spiking

 

The demonstrations around the nation have continued in an effort to draw attention to gross injustices in our nation.  Violence and property damage on both sides should be condemned and punished.  The peaceful expression of grievances is protected by the Constitution.  I pray that exercise of this right will be done safely.  Meanwhile, it is up to the justice system to ensure that the rights of citizens are respected and protected.

 

It is no longer sufficient to be passively non-Racist; it is necessary for all humans of good conscience to be actively anti-Racist.  To be anti-Fascist is to be anti-Racist.  It is time for the citizens to reform their local police departments.  It is time for economic justice and racial justice.

 

There are only 99 days left until the election on November 3rd.  Accordingly, time is limited to speak up for and provide financial support for our preferred candidates, regardless of where they appear on the ballot.  Neither U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania is running for re-election in 2020.  Toomey will be running in 2022 if he seeks re-election.  Casey will be running in 2024 if he seeks re-election.  Governor Wolf has two more years left in his term and is term-limited and is prohibited from running again in 2022..  According to the Department of State of the Commonwealth of PA, Statewide and State Level Offices Eligible for Election in 2020 are:

President of the United States

PA Attorney General – candidates are: Josh Shapiro  (Incumbent) (Democratic Party) and Heather Heidelbaugh  (Republican Party)

PA Auditor General – candidates are: Nina Ahmad  (Democratic Party) and Timothy DeFoor  (Republican Party).  The current officeholder, Eugene DePasquale (D), was unable to run for re-election due to term limits.

PA State Treasurer – candidates are: Joseph Torsella  (Incumbent) (Democratic Party) and Stacy Garrity  (Republican Party)

U.S. Representative in Congress - Every member of the U.S. House of Representatives runs for re-election every two years.  So, the entire delegation from Pennsylvania will be running.  Of course we will only see on the ballot the names of those running to represent the Congressional District in which we live.  For example, Brendan Boyle is currently the incumbent in the district in which I reside.

PA Senator in the General Assembly (Odd numbered districts) So, only half of the PA Senate will be running in 2020.  The other half will be running in 2022.  My state senator, John Sabatina Jr., is running for re-election to the Pennsylvania State Senate to represent District 5.

Representative in the PA General Assembly.  For example, my PA State Rep is Jared Solomon, representing District 202. He assumed office in 2016. His current term ends on November 30, 2020.  He won the Democratic primary on June 2^nd and is running for re-election on November 3, 2020.

For ALL my Non military FRIENDS out there, this may or may not help you understand those of us that served in the Military.

We Are Veterans.

We left home at a very young age for an unknown adventure.

We loved our country enough to defend it and protect it with our own lives.

We said goodbye to friends and family and everything we knew.

We learned the basics and then we scattered in the wind to the far corners of the Earth.

We found new friends and new family.

We became brothers and sisters regardless of color, race or creed.

We had plenty of good times, and plenty of bad times.

We didn’t get enough sleep.

We smoked and drank too much.

We picked up both good and bad habits.

We worked hard and played harder.

We didn’t earn a great wage.

We experienced the happiness of mail call and the sadness of missing important events.

We didn’t know when, or even if, we were ever going to see home again.

We grew up fast, and yet somehow, we never grew up at all.

We fought for our freedom, as well as the freedom of others.

Some of us saw actual combat, and some of us didn’t.

Some of us saw the world, and some of us didn’t.

Some of us dealt with physical warfare, most of us dealt with psychological warfare.

We have seen and experienced and dealt with things that we can’t fully describe or explain, as not all of our sacrifices were physical.

We participated in time honored ceremonies and rituals with each other, strengthening our bonds and camaraderie.

We counted on each other to get our job done and sometimes to survive it at all.

We have dealt with victory and tragedy.

We have celebrated and mourned.

We lost a few along the way.

When our adventure was over, some of us went back home, some of us started somewhere new and some of us never came home at all.

We have told amazing and hilarious stories of our exploits and adventures.

We share an unspoken bond with each other, that most people don’t experience, and few will understand.

We speak highly of our own branch of service, and poke fun at the other branches.

We know however, that, if needed, we will be there for our brothers and sisters and stand together as one, in a heartbeat.

Being a veteran is something that had to be earned, and it can never be taken away.

It has no monetary value, but at the same time it is a priceless gift.

People see a veteran and they thank them for their service.

When we see each other, we give that little upwards head nod, or a slight smile, knowing that we have shared and experienced things that most people have not.

So, from myself to the rest of the veterans out there, I commend and thank you for all that you have done and sacrificed for your country.

Try to remember the good times and forget the bad times.

Share your stories.

But most importantly, stand tall and proud, for you have earned the right to be called a Veteran. 🇺🇸
