Legends of the Ho Chi Minh Trail

TREA has received information from Congressional sources that the health care bill under consideration in the House of Representatives DOES in fact affect veterans eligible for VA health care, and TRICARE-eligible retirees.

Current law gives low-income individuals a subsidy to help pay for their health insurance, while the new law would instead give them a tax credit.  The credit would allow an individual to deduct a portion of their health insurance premium from their taxes.

But as the bill stands now, any veteran eligible for government healthcare (VA or TRICARE) would not receive a tax credit if the veteran purchases private health insurance. It would potentially force those veterans to use VA healthcare at a time when the VA already does not have the capacity to treat its current enrollees.  This would affect approximately 7 million veterans. However, the actual number is unknown because many veterans use the VA, but do not receive all of their care at the VA.

The important word is eligible- because this could affect veterans who have never used the VA system and are not enrolled.

This would predominantly affect lower income veterans who would otherwise qualify for a tax credit, and any veterans who fall into the priority group 8 category (non-service connected or partially service connected)-which means they will wait at the back of the line to get care through the VA, because a private healthcare plan may be unaffordable without a tax credit.

The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the bill at 4:00 on 3/24/17 (Eastern Time), so we urge you to immediately contact your Representative and tell him or her that you are opposed to any health care legislation that could reduce health care for veterans.
